Online Classes vs. Traditional Classes

If you are trying to decide between online classes and those held in a traditional classroom setting at a university, you should first consider your learning style and how you prefer to take in information in order to decide which would be best for you. Both online and traditional classes have their own advantages, and it is up to each student to decide which kind of class most appeals to them.

One of the benefits of online classes is that you get to work at your own pace. If you are adept at teaching yourself, then you can get through your class work and your daily lesson much faster than you would be able to do in the controlled setting of a traditional classroom, and you can even "work ahead" of schedule on future lectures and lessons. Because many online classes present the material all at once to students, you could have the ability to complete a semester of course work in just a few weeks. As long as all assignments are turned in on time and you do well on your tests, most professors do not mind allowing you to work at your own pace.

The flip side of this is that if your pace tends to be slow, you may not be able to get enough out of the online classroom environment. If you cannot raise your hand to ask a question during the lecture, you may be easily lost. While most professors do provide contact information for students, you still might find yourself exercising a variety of other options to get help. Whether you spend time on the electronic bulletin board looking for help from other students or you end up heading to campus for tutoring to help you get through your class, if you work at a slow pace, the online environment may actually take up more of your time.

Another benefit of online classes is that if you are confident in your abilities, you can skip remedial lectures for information you may have covered in previous classes. You can complete the assignments and take the tests without spending time on familiar material. This can be a huge time saver for students, as some traditional classes base part of your grade on attendance.

Finally, with online classes, you have the ability to teach yourself. If you do not learn well by listening to a lecture, working through the textbook on your own time might be a better option. This is much harder to do in traditional classes where attendance is often required and classes move at a set pace. If, however, lectures are the way that you soak up information, then traditional classes may be best for you.

The class that works best for you is based on your abilities as a student and your preferred learning methods. Whether you choose online classes or a more traditional approach, looking carefully at your own learning methods is a good place to start.
